14 Hands14 HANDS

website

Inspired by the Wild Horses of Washington State, 14 Hands is a wine borne from the Hills. - The inspiration for 14 Hands wines recalls a time when wild mustangs once freely roamed the hills of eastern Washington State. These small horses, measuring a scant fourteen hands high – a “hand” being equivalent to a man’s palm width, approximately four inches – would travel down from the hills every day to drink from the Columbia River and graze along the riverbank and then retreat back to the hills at night. Strong and tenacious, these little horses became known for their endurance and wild spirit. This unique and beautiful landscape gave these unbridled horses their spirit and tenacity that now feeds our vines. With loamy–sand and gravel soils, these hills require a strong and determined grapevine resulting in big, bold, juicy red wines and crisp, fruit-forward white wines.

In 1965 most people were tinkering with cars in their garage. Davis Bynum was tinkering with wine. He created Barefoot Bynum Burgundy in that tiny room. But our spirited ways really began with our founders, Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey. In 1986, they took a sleepy label and gave it Sole. Both agreed it was time for a wine that didn't take itself too seriously. So, Barefoot Cellars was created (Bonnie liked the name because it was easy to pronounce) and initially run out of their home. Some say the office was so small you had to go outside to change your mind.

B SideB SIDE

In the early 1950s record companies introduced the two-sided 45. The "A" side played the song the record companies hoped would become a hit. But the "B" side was often the real find, frequently revealing an undiscovered gem. Inspired by these unheralded classics, B Side wines bring this alternative sensibility to the decidedly A-list world of Napa Valley wine. Hailing from Napa's "flip" side, B Side reds are crafted with grapes sourced from the slightly-off-the-beaten-track vineyards along the valley's eastern hillsides. They're authentic originals: a little experimental and unexpected, crafted and perfected behind-the-scenes for those with a penchant for discovery.

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds’ influence on Australia’s winemaking psyche. Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Here, three enthusiastic young Sicilians – Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta – began their winemaking venture in the mid-1980s. The trio spent subsequent years matching the extraordinarily diverse Sicilian soils with both indigenous and international grape varieties. The result? A family of critically-acclaimed wines that demonstrate how brilliance can be attained through the thoughtful marriage between grape variety and terroir.

In the 1970's, Anthony Terlato became the #1 importer of premium Italian wines. He believed there was an opportunity for quality Italian wines beyond traditional Italian restaurant wine lists, and he believed wine lovers were ready to experience a truly high-end Italian white. While in Italy, he explored a range of regions and varietals and determined that Pinot Grigio was the wine that could revolutionize the perception of Italian wines in high-end restaurants. In a restaurant in Italy, he ordered all 18 Pinot Grigios on the list and tasted every one. When he tasted Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio from the Marzotto family, he knew he had found his varietal and the proper relationship.

Why do we do the things we do? From the beginning, we have set out to build a wine company that is different in its approach, one that is innovative and not afraid to think outside the square. We want to put some fun back into wine. In its simplest form, it could be said that we squeeze the grapes and put them in a bottle. However, in practice there are many different steps and countless hours involved, from vineyard, through to winemaking, tasting, blending and maturation in order to make consistent, quality wines.

We made our first wine in a plastic tub. Stirred it with a baseball bat. It was a senior project at Cal Poly that very quickly became a reason to be. In 1981, we bought the winery’s first vineyard and two years later released our first two wines: a Pinot Noir and a Cabernet Sauvignon. Our unconventional roots made it possible for us to become who we are today--the leading luxury winery on California’s Central Coast. We named the winery Wild Horse as a tribute to the herds of mustangs that once roamed the hills above the vineyards. And quite possibly we also had in mind the Cal Poly mascot – a galloping horse.

The best wines are crafted by winemakers who are intimately connected to their wines. Winemakers who stay close to the vineyard, who select their grapes by hand at the perfect moment of ripeness. Winemakers who taste their barrel selections and blend the individual lots together to create an exquisitely balanced wine. This is how Ralf Holdenried makes wine at William Hill Estate Winery. And he wouldn't have it any other way.
